National Bank Conducts a Golf Tournament in Blantyre

Andrew Ngomwa and Joleen Bapu produced outstanding perfomances to emerge victorious  during the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Golf Tournament at Blantyre Sports Club on Saturday. Ngomwa playing off handicap 19, scored 38 points to win the championship for the men's category whereas Bapu, playing off handicap 30, had 36 points as she triumphed in the ladies section. Ngomwa said he did not expect to win the tournament. "I wasn't feeling well and just took some medicine as a precaution. I came here to enjoy and relax, otherwise,I thought I could not compete effectively. It was until I hit some balls well that I realised that I had a chance to win,"he said.

 

Steve Chanje settled for second position with 36 points while playing off handicap 18. Gift Gondwe, playing off handicap 23, collected 35 points to occupy third position.In the ladies' category, Bapu was followed by Jochebed Mpanga on second position and Lilian Kawaza on third. Bapu said it was her major success having launched her golf career recently. Mpanga playing off handicap 33 amassed 34 points while  third placed Kawaza playing off handicap 23, collected 33 points.

In individual categories, Harriet Marian hit the Longest Drive in the Ladies section on hole number 7 whereas Aulia Alfazema won the nearest to the pin on hole number 1. In the men's sectionm Furkani Gani hit the longest drive on hole 13 with Willam Mabulekesi earning a rare applause after scoring the nearest to the pin on hole number 14.

NBM Head of Strategy, Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Wilkins Mijiga, said they organized the tournament because the bank appreciates the role which golfers play in driving Malawi's economy. "We wanted to take time to interact with them and get feedback,"he said.
