National Bank of Malawi in Partnership with Malawi Defence Force and the Archdiocese of Blantyre has set aside the 6th January as the NBM tree planting day as part of the Go Green Initiative which Started last year. The Bank planted the trees at Zomba Mountain and the Catholic Institute (C.I) Parish.
This year, NBM is maintaining the Partnership with Malawi Defence Force, Archdiocese of Blantyre and the Directorate of Forestry to plant a total of 100,000 tree seedlings in Mzuzu, Blantyre, Lilongwe Karonga and Zomba.
This campaign is of great importance because it involves tree planting for environmental conservation. We are all aware of the unprecedented power challenges we had in 2017. The power cut was attributed among other factors to the fact that all the trees have been cut and all the forests depleted. This has affected water systems in the catchment areas. This has also made rivers that only run when it rains and dwindling water levels in our lakes and rivers. As NBM, its Partners and all Malawians plant trees in the Go Green Campaign, Malawi will truly start to tackle heard on the challenges caused by environmental degradation including power outages.
