Opening and Managing an Account

How can I open an account?

You can now open your account fully online in just a few minutes. This is the fastest and most convenient option.

Online Option

  2. Follow the simple, step-by-step instructions to complete your application.
  3. No need to visit a Service Centre.

In-Person Option

You can also open an account by visiting your nearest National Bank of Malawi Service Centre.

What are the requirements and minimum balances for different personal accounts?
  • Savings Account – Minimum balance: K5,000
  • Special Saver Account – Minimum balance: K1,000
  • Student Save Account – Minimum balance: K1,000
    • Requirements: Student ID from a recognised institution, a reference letter from your school, and a utility bill.
  • Current Account – Minimum balance: None
    • Features: Cheque book access and overdraft facility (for qualifying customers).
  • ITF (In-Trust-For) Savings Account (for minors) – Minimum balance: K10,000
    • Requirements: Guardian's National ID, child's birth certificate, utility bill, and map to residence. The account is managed by the guardian until the child turns 18.
How do I open a Business Account?

Online Option

The new digital onboarding process also facilitates business account opening. Please visit https://smartonboard.natbank.co.mw/ and follow the prompts to apply for a business account.

In-Person Option

You can also visit any Service Centre.

Can I open a Diaspora Account?

Yes. The Diaspora Account is specifically designed for Malawians living or working abroad.

Key benefits: Multiple currency options (MWK and FCD), Visa debit and credit cards, free internet banking, higher interest rates on savings (2% above the normal rate), and loan opportunities.

Online Option

You can now open a Diaspora Account fully online through our digital onboarding portal: https://smartonboard.natbank.co.mw/. Follow the simple instructions to complete your application from anywhere in the world.

Can I open a Foreign Currency Denominated Account (FCDA)?

Yes. This account allows you to hold and manage funds in foreign currency (for example, USD) without a minimum balance requirement.

Who it is for: Local exporters, individuals funded by external sources, Malawians living abroad, or those earning income in foreign currency.

Online Option

You can now open an FCDA fully online through our digital onboarding portal: https://smartonboard.natbank.co.mw/. This is the fastest and most convenient option.

In-Person Option

You can also visit your nearest NBM branch for assistance.

How can I update my KYC (Know Your Customer) details?

You can now update your KYC details digitally and conveniently without visiting a branch.

Online Option

  1. Visit our secure online portal: https://smartonboard.natbank.co.mw/
  2. Follow the simple instructions to review and update your information.
  3. It only takes a few minutes.

In-Person Option

You can also update your KYC by visiting a Service Centre:

  1. Fill in the KYC Update Form.
  2. Provide your National ID, proof of address (utility bill), and proof of source of income (payslip or bank statement).
My account has been dormant for a while. Can I reactivate it?

If an account has been dormant for more than six (6) months, it may be automatically closed. We recommend visiting your nearest Service Centre to have it re-opened or to open a new account.

Mo626 Digital+, Wallet and Cards

How can I register for Mo626 Digital+?

Visit any National Bank of Malawi Service Centre with your National ID. Alternatively, download the application form from our website, fill it out, scan it along with your National ID, and email it to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

I registered for Mo626 but have not received my PIN. What should I do?

You can visit any Service Centre with your National ID to have your PIN reset. Alternatively, you can download the change request form from our website and email the completed form with your National ID to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

My Mo626 account is blocked. How can I unblock it?

Call our Contact Centre at 626, reach us on WhatsApp at +265 996 006 262, or visit any Service Centre for assistance.

I have forgotten my Mo626 M-PIN or T-PIN. What should I do?

I have changed my phone. How do I reactivate Mo626?

You will need to visit a Service Centre to have your device ID reset. Alternatively, you can send an email to the Call Centre. You may also contact our Call Centre on WhatsApp at +265 996 006 262.

What is Mo626 Wallet?

Mo626 Wallet is a digital wallet service that allows both account holders and non-account holders to do banking using just a mobile phone. You can send and receive money, pay for services, and withdraw cash. To register, dial *3626#.

I have lost my ATM card. Can I still access my account?

Yes. You can use the Cardless Withdraw service on the Mo626 Digital+ App or via USSD (*626#). You can also request a card replacement.

Can I collect my Visa Card at a different Service Centre?

Yes. Visit the Service Centre where you would like to collect your card and request a card transfer.

I am travelling abroad. Will I be able to use my NBM Visa card?

Yes, you can use your card for ATM withdrawals, online transactions, and POS payments. However, the card must be activated for international use. Please visit a Service Centre or email your branch before you travel.

Internet Banking and Statements

How can I register for Internet Banking (BankNet360)?

Download the BankNet360 application form from our website. Fill it out, scan it, and email it along with your National ID to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. You can also register at any Service Centre.

How can I access my e-statement?

You can view and download your e-statement by registering for BankNet360 or through the Mo626 Digital+ App. You can also visit any Service Centre.

International Transfers

What is the SWIFT code for National Bank of Malawi?
